Phoenix International Raceway is located at the base of Estrella Mountains, west of Downtown Phoenix. It is the most celebrated race track in Phoenix with a 650 acre facility and a seating capacity of 78,000 people. It was built to replace the Arizona State Fairgrounds as the major Phoenix automobile racing venue. The raceway was built in 1964 and showcased the first NASCAR event in 1988.

Phoenix International Raceway has played host to many popular and prestigious events namely NASCAR Winston Cup, Busch Grand National and Craftsman Truck series, apart from IRL and Rolex races. Names like Bill Elliott, Davey Allison, Dale Earnhardt, Dick Trickle, and Michael Andretti have all won races here.

The Valley of the Sun has a long history of hosting Indy-style racing. Phoenix International Raceway's track is one mile long and has an unusual bend in the backstretch. It is rated as a favorite place to watch a race. Until 2005, you could watch at least one major Indy-style racing event here annually. The raceway is used year-round by various Indy Racing League teams and also for filming of television commercials.
